How to Sell Your Car Privately Without Getting Scammed

By The Vaultly Team

Selling your car privately on platforms like Carsales or Facebook Marketplace will almost always get you a better price than trading it in at a dealership. However, it also means you have to deal directly with the public, which inevitably includes scammers and time-wasters.

While much of the advice around marketplace safety focuses on protecting buyers, sellers face significant risks too. Here is how to sell your car privately in Australia without getting scammed.

1. Beware the Sight Unseen Buyer

If a buyer contacts you and offers to pay your full asking price immediately without inspecting the car, be on high alert. This is the classic setup for an overpayment scam.

The scammer will send you a fake receipt showing they have accidentally transferred too much money (e.g., $15,000 instead of $12,000). They will then ask you to refund the $3,000 difference to a specific account or to a shipping agent. The original transfer was fake, but the $3,000 you send them is real money out of your pocket. Never accept overpayments, and never refund the difference.

2. Protect Yourself During Test Drives

When a legitimate buyer wants to test drive the car, you must take precautions. Always ask to see their physical driver licence before they get behind the wheel, and take a photo of it. Check that your insurance covers other drivers. Finally, always go with them on the test drive — never hand over the keys and let them drive off alone.

3. Do Not Trust Screenshots

When it comes time to pay, the biggest risk you face is the fake receipt scam. A buyer may show you a highly convincing screenshot on their phone that appears to show a successful bank transfer. They will often claim the funds might take 24 hours to clear because it is a different bank.

Never hand over the keys, the car, or the signed registration papers until you have logged into your own banking app on your own device and verified that the cleared funds are sitting in your account.

4. Use a Secure Platform for Deposits and Final Payment

The safest way to handle the financial side of a private car sale is to remove direct transfers entirely. When a buyer wants to leave a deposit to hold the car while they arrange a mechanic or finance, do not take a cash deposit or a direct PayID transfer.

Instead, use a secure platform like Vaultly. Vaultly verifies the buyer's identity and holds the deposit securely. You know the buyer is serious because the funds are locked in, and you do not have to worry about fake receipts. When it is time for the final payment, the funds are released securely, ensuring a safe and transparent handover for both parties.
